When do I choose MTP/MPO fiber optic cabling?
MTP/MPO fiber optic cables are ideal for applications that require a lot of bandwidth (from 40G), where the distance is relatively short (usually up to 100m) and where many connections are made in little space (so-called High Density solutions). This cable and connector contains 12 or more fibers and by combining the bandwidth of several fibers, high speeds are achieved.

- Data centres
- Backbones in (LAN) networks
- Unlocking WiFi or 4G and 5G masts
What does MTP/MPO stand for?
MPO is an abbreviation of Multi-fiber Push On. MPO is the generic name for the connector that connects multiple fibers simultaneously. An improved version is the MTP® connector. MTP® is the abbreviation for Mechanical Transfer Push-Pull and is a patented US Conec connector.
Intronics supplies MTP/MPO fiber optic cables of the ACT brand. ACT cables are equipped with the improved MTP® US Conec Elite connector, but are called MTP/MPO cables. This is because both terms are used in the market and MTP can also be called MPO.

What is the difference between MTP and MPO?
In short, the quality of the MTP connector is better, resulting in a more stable and reliable connection. The advantages of an MTP connector compared to an MPO connector are:- Removable connector housing offers more flexibility
- Under physical pressure, the connection of an MTP connector can be maintained better
- Improved guide pins leading to higher precision and less wear per stitch cycle
- Presence of an additional clamp which leads to better protection of the fibers
How do I determine the right quality?
Based on the appearance of a cable it is not possible to determine what the quality is. There are a number of points you need to pay attention to in order to determine the quality.
Test report of an ACT MTP/MPO cable. Each fibre is tested for damping (IL) and reflections (RL) in both directions at two wavelengths.
Grades
Different degrees of quality have been established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Grade A to C. With Grade A you are assured of the best quality fibers and connectors. For professional applications where reliability is paramount, we recommend Grade A.Test report
Do you opt for cables with an individual test report? Then you can be sure that your cable has been tested and you are aware of the optical performance in your network. Optical performance such as damping and reflection have a direct influence on the speed and reliability of the cable.Test report of an ACT MTP/MPO cable. 100% 3D tested
For MTP/MPO cables, we recommend that you only select cables whose connectors are 100% 3D tested. For "standard" patch cables, a sample is sufficient. But for MTPMPO fiber optic cables it is crucial to test each connector in 3D, because the fibers are processed in a single ferrule.
An incorrectly polished connector can reduce the optical performance of your connector within a short period of time after installation. This is not visible in the test report because it is measured immediately after production. It can also occur with Grade A parts in case of errors in the production process.
Quality control of the production process
Grade, an individual test report and 100% 3D testing are not the only quality control matters. The production process and its quality control is of great importance. An incorrectly polished connector can reduce the optical performance of your connector within a short period of time after installation. Tip: Choose a reputable brand
If you choose a reputable brand, the risk of errors in your network is minimal. ACT is a renowned brand and has built up a good reputation over the years by delivering consistent quality. ACT does everything in its power to deliver high consistent quality. ACT delivers guaranteed quality, which you will experience daily in a reliable network. When do I use what type of cable?
Depending on the application, choose the right type of MTP/MPO cable.
MTP/MPO patch cable are also used as a connection to the fixed cabling. Fixed cabling (also known as installation cabling) can be (multiple) trunk cabling within a data center or server room but also an outer cable.
Patch cable
MTP/MPO patch cables are used to connect active devices to each other. MTP/MPO patch cables are usually used to patch into 19" cabinets. In some cases, MTP/MPO patch cables can also be found in cable ducts to cover larger distances.MTP/MPO patch cable are also used as a connection to the fixed cabling. Multiple trunk cable
MTP/MPO trunk cables or multiple trunk cables can be used to lay the infrastructure of your data centre or server room. These cables have an extra sheath that makes them suitable for longer lengths.
Trunk cables are also used to establish multiple MTP/MPO connections over long distances.

Outer casing
MTP/MPO outer cables are used for the unlocking of 4g or 5g transmission masts, among other things. These cables are water-repellent, UV-resistant and often also have a water and dust-repellent connector.
What else should I pay attention to with MTP/MPO cabling?
If you choose the MTP/MPO fiber optic cabling, there are a number of things you should take into account:
- Due to the use of multiple fibres, these cables can be crossed in several ways.
- MTP|MPO connectors are available in both male and female versions.
- Adapters are available in key up and key down versions. Read more about key up and key down here.
